MADC's THE BACCHAE: Philip Leone Ganado plays Pentheus

The Play

The Bacchae is one of the greatest of all Greek tragedies - savage, comic and intensely lyrical. The magnetic young Dionysos - icon, hedonist, god - returns home with his cult of female followers to exact his revenge, unleashing the full force of female sexuality on the city. David Greig, whose adaptation of this classic Greek play is being performed by MADC, describes The Bacchae as;

" ...a story which speaks directly and truthfully to the heart of what it means to be human. It asks us to ‘recognise’ and licence the Dionysian impulse within us – the irrational, the sensual, the sexual – and the play warns us of what might happen to society if we don’t."
